Accessibility statement

What is implemented

Every item below is in the code today and can be checked.

Structure

Real headings in the right order, one h1 per page, real lists, and a label on every form control.

Keyboard

A skip link to the main content on every page, and a visible focus ring on every interactive element. No rule in the stylesheet removes an outline without drawing a replacement.

Contrast

Every foreground and background pair in the design system was computed against WCAG 2.1 AA thresholds on both the dark ground and the paper ground, including the three accent-on-paper combinations that fail and are therefore never used. The measurements are recorded with the project.

Motion

Everything that moves stops for prefers-reduced-motion: reduce. The flicker on the sign holds fully lit rather than dimming, so nothing becomes harder to read when animation is off.

State

Where this site shows a state — an open call, the current issue, the page you are on — the word is in the text, not only in the hue.

Measure

Prose is set at 19px on a line of about 66 characters. The previous version of this site ran 16px across roughly 105, which is far harder to read.

Lineation

Poems keep their authored line breaks at every screen width, and a line forced to wrap is indented so it reads as a wrap rather than as a break the poet made.

Tap targets

Interactive controls are at least 44 by 44 pixels.

One site

There is no separate mobile version. Everyone gets the same document and the same content.

What is still wrong

Alt text

Descriptive alt text for the cover images is not written yet. The old site used the uploaded filename, which we will not carry over. The gap is recorded rather than papered over.

Audit

Nobody outside this project has tested the site with assistive technology. We are not claiming a conformance level we have not earned.

Third parties

Submissions and the anthology are handled on other companies’ sites. Their accessibility is theirs, not ours, and we cannot speak for it.
